Chumley Cope

Chumley is a trained historian and veteran prep school teacher, who launched Up Close Travel in 2004.  The company is the natural expression of Chumley’s interest in off-the-beaten-track and the people and culture to be found there, past and present.  Driving a Jeep during his impressionable youth didn’t dull this curiosity.

“One of my ambitions is to instinctively drive across the United States using only non-numbered, locally named roads.”  - C.C.  (Stay tuned for trip details!)

Most of Chumley’s trips can be found on the map.

Chumley has traveled widely in Africa, Europe, North and Central America -- by foot, bicycle, canoe; train, helicopter, and small plane.  A few of the more evocative moments?

“Watching the stars from the ‘chair of honor’ in a central Congolese village; approaching 60 mph on the Arenal zip line; reading epitaphs in the British Cemetery in Bayeux.”

Chumley’s interests include writing, photography, archaeology, gardening, and sports.  He lives with his family in the South Carolina Upstate, while proudly claiming his Asheville roots.  Chumley taught history and religious studies at the Asheville School, St. Andrews-Sewanee School, the Webb School of Knoxville, and the Spartanburg Day School.  He has history degrees from the University of North Carolina and N.C. State University.
