Explore Up Close, LLC, was founded in 2004 by Chumley Cope, who stepped out of the prep school teaching world to follow his passions for learning, exploring, and travel on his own terms. Over four years later, most of Chumley's trips still follow a characteristic style -- whether it's exploring Suffolk by bicycle or central Georgia courhouse towns by bus: an in-depth view that goes beneath the surface, a celebration of the sharing of human stories, and an emphasis on the comraderie of the travelers. Explore Up Close focuses on the following services: guided, themed travel in the Southeastern U.S. and beyond; independent-styled travel experiences for academic groups, anywhere in the world; and the development of educational programs centered around local history and resources.

Chumley lives with his family in the South Carolina Upstate. He has degrees in history from the University of North Carolina and NC State University. His hobbies include archaeology, gardening, writing, and photography.
