This exploration adventure features some of the most fascinating stories I've come across anywhere in the Southeast. Some highlights will include visits to John Rice Erwin's acclaimed Museum of Appalachia, the planned city of Norris, and Oak Ridge -- the "Secret City" -- and its historic K-25 plant and Museum of Science and Energy. We will venture onto the beautiful Cumberland Plateau where we'll visit the Victorian community of Rugby -- planted in the 1880's by English social reformer, Thomas Hughes. Not far away is the farmstead home of World War I hero, Sergeant Alvin York.

cost: $549 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $125); cost is all-inclusive except for one lunch.
This is a true "fall retreat" on one of the most beautiful lakes in the Appalachians. Besides the amenities of the tranquil lodge, including gourmet dining, those who wish may explore the Joyce Kilmer Forest, with tracts of old growth forest, the Cherohala Skyway (scenic parkway), and the interesting village of Robbinsville. We will see the Cheoah and Fontana Dams as well.

Cost: $649 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $175); cost is all-inclusive.
Exploring the S.C. Cotton Trail (departing from Hilton Head)
December 2 - 4
This will be a very intriguing trip to numerous beautiful, uncrowded places in the old Pee Dee River cotton belt -- decked out for the holidays. Hartsville -- among the prettiest towns in S.C. -- will be our base as we explore historic churches and villages along exquisite driving routes. Highlights will include guided touring of sites in Hartsville, Cheraw, and Bishopville, and the annual Black Creek Arts (and crafts) "Christmas Shop" in Hartsville.

Cost: $599 / person (double occ.; single supplement, $125); cost is all-inclusive except for one lunch.
[coming in the spring of 2010]
Newberry: the Old Town and the Opera House ("Camelot")
December 6 - 7 [departing from Gainesville / North Georgia]
Beautiful backroads will lead us from Georgia to old Newberry. We'll hear stories about the historic town square area, and enjoy a gourmet dinner at Steven W's Bistro. We'll cross the square to the early (and beautifully restored) Opera House for a performance of the classic musical "Camelot." The following morning we'll visit the old trading fort of Ninety-Six, before following more scenic backroads to Georgia.

Cost: $299 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $65)
