Georgia's Other Classical City: Rome (day trip departing Gainesville)

Rome is one of the prettiest small cities in the entire Southeast. From the beautifully sited and constructed churches and homes on Myrtle Hill to Broad Street's century-old appeal . . . to the fascinating story of Martha Berry and Oak Hill estate, this will be a classical experience.

Gold and Rail in old Cherokee Country [North Georgia] (Hilton Head dep.)

This is a terrific "small group ramble," departing Hilton Head, into the heart of North Georgia. Overnights will be in Washington (1), and near Dahlonega (2). We'll venture into the old Cherokee stronghold of the North Georgia mountains, where gold was discovered in the 1820's, hastening efforts at "removal." Highlights will include backroads exploration in east-central Georgia, visits to the Dahlonega Gold Museum, Amicalola Falls Lodge, and the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway -- following the Toccoa River to Copperhill, Tennessee. Beautiful countryside and driving routes will abound.

Marion, VA / Lincoln Theatre / Burke's Garden

Marion is a pretty city near the head of the Holston Valley in southwest Virginia. Special features include the lovely mid-1920's General Francis Marion Hotel and the almost one-of-a-kind, historic Lincoln Theatre, with live musical performances (and a decor that has to be experienced). We will enjoy the ambiance of Marion, and explore the beautiful folds of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley to the North and West: Crab Orchard's regional museum and the legendary, high altitude farming valley called "Burke's Garden."
