Interim Term Travel
Explore Up Close can help you create, plan, lead, and / or support your interim term travel program (January / May term, winter or spring break, summers). EUC supports the idea of independent travel – a determined attempt to search for authentic places and culture (and steer away from the over-commercialized “tourist sites” touted by the tourism establishment). “Independent-styled travel” can include emphasis on the following:
Explore Up Close asks: Which travel sites and experiences best open new worlds for the students (and professors) . . . and which sites and experiences best connect to “known worlds?”
Wofford College Professor John LeFebvre and Egyptologist Henry Ayoub on location in Ayn Musa, Sinai
• travel modes used by the locals (train, bus, foot) . . .
• time to observe, engage, and reflect . . .
• accommodations in local, family-owned hotels . . .
• locally prepared regional cuisine . . .
• exploration, on occasion, by foot, bicycle, or boat
What else does EUC bring to the table?
Personal interest and fascination with the type of “exploration travel” that interims are all about. A passion for comparing history and culture, across space and time. Interest in promoting responsible engagement with the world around us.
EUC analyzes, assesses, and gives feedback. The professors react and respond. The ball gets rolling. Plans are made. Excitement builds. Issues arise and are dealt with. The trip takes form. It’s a collaborative process and there’s generally lots of flexibility.
