Trip Description

This is a late-season adventure to two of the Southeast’s iconic coastal enclaves – Beaufort, South Carolina (the state’s most attractive “town”?), and Savannah, Georgia (one of the region’s rare historic urban centers).  Let’s delve into the stories, aura and ambiance, and remarkable design that make Beaufort and Savannah superlative southern cities.  We’ll spend two nights in each place, enjoying beautiful boutique inns in lovely settings.  In Beaufort, we’ll encounter novelist Pat Conroy’s inspiration and legacy (including the Pat Conroy Literary Center); slow-touring of Beaufort’s lovely residential streets in “The Point;” and the story of Reconstruction, embodied in the historic Penn Center on St. Helena Island, and in the new Reconstruction Era National Historical Park (downtown Beaufort).  Lovely live oak-lined backroads will connect us to Savannah.  In the city, we’ll explore the historic green spaces that give Savannah a major slice of its uniqueness:  several of the 22 historic “Squares” that survive; Forsyth Park; and Bonaventure Cemetery.  We’ll visit historic homes and historic houses of worship.  And we’ll enjoy down time to relax and unwind ( . . . our inn is perfectly placed “in the middle of everything”).  Throughout our trip we’ll enjoy the tastes and ambiance of local cafes and restaurants.
