Trip Description

Let’s spend a weekend in and around Floyd, Virginia – lovely “mountain town,” located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in southwestern Virginia.

We’ll enjoy down-home hospitality as we spend two nights in Floyd – a center of crafts and mountain music, and a jumping off point for fascinating mountain stories. You’ll have opportunities to savor the quaint ambiance, galleries and boutiques, local food and drink, and live music . . . and explore the surrounding mountains and valleys. We’ll discover local artists and wine-makers, stories about mountaineers and the creation of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and places of unusual beauty – coming and going!

Itinerary

Day 1

Depart from the South Carolina Upstate / North Carolina Foothills this morning, and begin our adventure!
Our drive will become increasingly scenic as we continue towards the charming town of Floyd, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southern Virginia. We’ll check into our hotel, the Hotel Floyd – home for the next two nights. Relax on the patio, then enjoy dinner in town, followed by an evening of fantastic bluegrass music!  Floyd is famous for its “Friday Night Jamboree,” and the streets of Floyd will come alive with local musicians this evening. Inside the historic Floyd Country Store, we’ll have reserved seats where you can relax and enjoy the featured bluegrass band. You’ll find yourself tapping your feet and clapping along during this infectiously fun evening – and maybe jumping up to join the dancers!

Day 2

This morning, enjoy breakfast in our hotel. Today, we’ll drive onto the “Virginia version” of the Blue Ridge Parkway and make a stop at one of the most photographed sites out of all 469 miles of the Parkway: Mabry Mill. This 1910 mill still grinds flour today, and you can observe blacksmithing, weaving, and other Appalachian crafts on site. Our loop drive will include several scenic overlooks, and take us back to Floyd via the Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church – after a relaxing stop at a delightful Appalachian winery. Later, enjoy free time to enjoy the art galleries, shops, and small-town ambiance of Floyd. Tonight, we’ll enjoy dinner at a great local restaurant; overnight in Floyd.

Day 3

After breakfast in our inn, we’ll enjoy morning drives returning us to Tennessee and the Carolinas. We’ll make a stop at one of the only surviving “shot towers” in the U.S. (story on location); and we’ll drive through the mining community of Austinville (and yes, you can think Austin, Texas . . . that story also on location). We’ll have lunch in the small railroad town of Meadowview, Virginia, at a country store-meets-restaurant owned by acclaimed author Barbara Kingsolver and her family. En route back home, we’ll pass through the lovely valley of the Nolichucky River, ascend the high mountains and drive over the high Appalachian Divide pass as we return into the Carolinas. Return back home in the late afternoon, inspired and refreshed by our adventures in Southwest Virginia!
