Exploring Quebec's Charming Eastern Townships Region
July 23 – 29, 2018
Mid-summer means it’s time to go North – to the idyllic Eastern Townships of Quebec. If you like lovely countryside, interspersed with lakes and gentle mountains, and punctuated with small villages and lakeside retreats . . . you’ve found your adventure! We’ll fly in and out of Montreal’s Trudeau Airport . . . and spend 7 days / 6 nights exploring a nature- and culture-rich world – that lies on the “Canadian side of New England.” We’ll savor the products of a centuries-old farm region: blueberries and jams; local cheeses and wines; maple caramels and chocolates; ciders and confits . . . and we’ll seek out local cafés and farms as we go. We’ll follow charming driving routes from village to village and farm to farm, spiced up with the occasional national park, waterfall, distinctive country church, or heritage museum. Our lodging will consist of historic inns and lakeside lodges that radiate the welcoming ambiance of the region. Multi-night stays at each will allow us to explore the surrounding area.
The Eastern Townships (or Cantons de l’Est in French) were settled in the late 18th and early 19th centuries by English Loyalists from the American Revolution, Irish, and Scots – a settler population that gradually blended Anglo-Irish names and traditions (like tea time) with French traditions. The result is a lovely cultural imprint on a countryside of natural beauty, featuring clean lakes and rivers, forested mountains, and well-kempt farms – some featuring traditional round barns.
Select site visits and trip highlights will include the lovely Abbaye de St. Benoit du Lac (in a truly stunning setting); the Mont Megantic Summit Drive and Observatory (one of Earth’s great Dark Sky places – for observation of the stars); and driving routes that take in covered bridges, wineries, and local culinary treats.
Trip Price: $3225 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $750); price includes six nights lodging with breakfast in high standard inns and hotels; ground transportation by comfortable van / mini-van(s); 4 lunches and 4 dinners; all touring. Price does not include airfare, other meals, alcohol, optional trip insurance.
Chumley’s take: “Quebec is clean and green . . . . This itinerary will give us a chance to see the marriage between age-old farming and building traditions and the boutique-chic lifestyle the Townships are known for today.”
Inns of Distinction will be featured on this trip!
