Classic Hotels and Christmas Markets: Alsace and the Black Forest

November 30 – December 9, 2018

Welcome to the cozy corner of Europe!  That “corner” is comprised of France’s northeast corner – Alsace, and Germany’s southwest corner, Baden-Wurtemburg (with its more famously named “mountain feature,” the Black Forest).  Delve into the rich history and culture of the region by small group.  Our group will enjoy the hospitality and warmth of classic hotels throughout our trip, spending multiple nights at each.  We’ll fly into Strasbourg, via Lufthansa Airlines, spending three nights in the old city.  From our central location, enjoy the fun of exploring Strasbourg’s beautiful squares, churches, museums, shopping galleries, and Christmas markets – and their famous ambient glow at night.  We’ll spend two nights in the edge of Alsace’s lovely Vosges mountains, paying visits to local artisans:  a wood-worker, wine and specialty food-makers . . . and one of France’s most beautiful monasteries.  All the while we’ll marvel at the natural beauty of the conifer forests, craggy eastern slope of the Vosges, and idyllic villages along the Alsatian wine route.  We’ll spend our last three nights in the Black Forest, at a 4-star forest hotel snuggled into a tight mountain valley.  From this lovely setting, we’ll explore cultural highlights in the surrounding area – architecture, churches, villages, local wines and . . . Munster cheese.  We’ll also take in the delights of the Staufen Christmas market – set in one of Europe’s prettiest small villages.  Are you in?!

Chumley’s take:  “Alsace is a fascinating area – with a distinct culture that remains somewhat aloof from both France and Germany.  We’ll be visiting a ‘region for all seasons,’ and we’ll be there for the magical Christmas-and-coming-of-winter season.  Pass the Gluhwein!”
