Kayaking NC's New River + Bluff Mountain Wildflowers
May 30 – June 1, 2018
This is a terrific expedition to the upper New River (North Carolina . . . do not think “West Virginia”). The south fork of the river meanders through lovely bucolic valleys, with the occasional riffle adding to the fun. It’s a lovely paddle through an uncommonly beautiful country. Off the river, we’ll explore local history and culture – and some of the prettiest drives in the Southeast. We’ll also hike Bluff Mountain – a beautiful peak, owned by the Nature Conservancy – where a guide will point out rare wildflowers, found only in mountain bog settings. Our accommodations will be in the comfortable Holiday Inn Express in West Jefferson. Meals will be delicious, and will include a dinner at the down-home Shatley Springs Inn. Put on your adventure hat and let’s go!
Trip Price: $779 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $100); price includes comfortable transportation, 2 nights lodging with breakfast, 3 lunches, 2 dinners, guided touring / entrances / activities throughout the trip. Price does not include alcohol or optional trip insurance.
Chumley’s take: “The New River is a highlight of the Southeastern United States. Surrounding Ashe and Alleghany counties might be my vote for ‘prettiest country’ in both Carolinas.”
This trip will also be a bona fide Southeastern Trip of Discovery!
