The South's Best Bed and Breakfasts: Mansfield Plantation and Historic Georgetown (SC)

February 19 – 22, 2019

Welcome to the Mansfield Plantation – Your Entrée into a Forgotten World

Small group.  Three nights at the Mansfield Plantation.  One of the South’s best bed and breakfast inns, located down a centuries-old oak alley, and positioned along the Black River – the 18th century “highway” connecting Mansfield to the known world.  The plantation itself is a “forgotten world” of vestiges from a different era.  Slave houses, the old mill, agricultural fields, now fallow.  The grounds offer 1000 acres to explore – on foot, or by kayak or bicycle (provided and available).  From Mansfield, we’ll indulge in slow exploration of the surrounding area.  We’ll visit one-of-a-kind Brookgreen Gardens; and a splendid, large, intact “plantation” known as the Hobcaw Barony.  We’ll enjoy downtown Georgetown’s pretty river walk and Rice Museum.  And we’ll uncover ancient churches, cemeteries, and stories connected to the historic rice basin of Georgetown’s “Five Rivers.”

Trip highlights:

  • The fun of the small group; warm and friendly atmosphere
  • Iconic Georgetown-area structures:  Prince George Winyah Church; the Old Market Building (housing the Rice Museum); Mansfield Plantation; Hobcaw Barony; Atalaya; and more
  • Brookgreen Gardens:  boat tour; the sculpture art of Anna Hyatt Huntington
  • Hobcaw Barony – guided touring
  • Local cuisine and hospitality; interesting Low Country stories on location

Trip price:  $1489 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $325); price includes comfortable transportation, 3 nights high-standard accommodation with sumptuous southern breakfast, 3 lunches, 2 dinners, guided touring / entrances / excursions throughout the trip.  Price does not include one lunch, one dinner, alcohol or optional trip insurance.

Chumley’s take:  South Carolina features some of the best ‘covered over’ stories – and places – in the United States.  We’ll uncover a few of them on this expedition.
