Discovering Denmark: From Baltic Island Traditions to Danish Design

July 12 – 22, 2019

Up Close in Northern Europe’s Quaint Kingdom

Join a small group of adventurers to soak in that mystical land we call Denmark.  Home to Vikings and a once-expansive Nordic empire, Denmark today is a mixture of idyllic small islands and archipelagos; cultural “capitals” like Copenhagen and Aarhus; and the wilder (relative term), more traditional Jutland Peninsula.  We’ll spend most of our time exploring the large islands of Zealand and Funen, and smaller islands of the Funen archipelago, before getting a taste of Jutland.  Half-timbered villages, pedestrian shopping streets, stately castles and gardens will abound.  We’ll enjoy multi-night stays in Copenhagen; in a castle-hotel on Hans Christian Andersen’s Funen; and in Aarhus.  We’ll drive the Danish lake district and spend one night in Aarhus, before taking the ferry back to Zealand and enjoying a free day in the Copenhagen area before returning home.  (That’s right – a free day to purchase those trendy, easy-to-pack items that line the shelves of Copenhagen’s leading-edge shops.)

Trip highlights:

  • Copenhagen: guided walking tour, featuring Copenhagen’s architecture, history, and progressive lifestyle; the acclaimed National Museum; Rosenborg Palace; the Torverhallerne KBH fresh food market; and more
  • Day trip to Helsingor, featuring the Danish National Maritime Museum and the remarkable arts-site of Louisiana
  • The charms of Svendborg, Tasinge Island, and the Hans Christian Andersen home
  • The Karen Blixen House and Museum
  • The Danish Lake District
  • Artsy Aarhus
  • Outstanding lodging and dining; native hospitality on display

Trip price:  $4,369 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $1,030); price includes comfortable chauffeured transportation; accommodation and breakfast for 9 nights in high-standard hotels; 4 lunches and 5 dinners; all activities per the itinerary.  Price does not include airfare, other meals, alcohol, or optional trip insurance.

Chumley’s take:  Can’t wait to experience the blend of quaint island vibe and urban sophistication.  And I want to buy cool stuff.  No idea what, exactly.  But very cool (and you know it’s easy-to-pack . . . )
