Whitewashed Hill Towns and the Legendary Alhambra
Step back in time to some of the most cherished and warred over territory on Earth. We’ll explore southern Spain by small group, visiting the world-class cities of Sevilla and Granada, and the “frontera” (frontier) that connects them. Along the way, we’ll uncover charming whitewashed villages (las pueblos blancos), and a mountainous countryside spilling down into the Mediterranean Sea.
- Sevilla – one of Europe’s “most livable” cities, and home of “flamenco”
- Jerez – home of the Royal Andalusian Riding School (we’ll visit!), and sherry production (we’ll taste!)
- Lovely hill towns – whitewashed, featuring winding streets, ancient churches (built on mosques), and million-dollar views: Vejer, Grazelema, Zahara de la Sierra, and Ronda
- Granada’s treasures: the Alhambra and Nasrid Palaces, Generalife Gardens, and the Albaycin (Moorish quarter)
Trip price: $3758 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $650); price includes comfortable van transportation in Spain, all activities / guided touring per the itinerary, 8 nights accommodation with breakfast in Spain, 4 lunches and 4 dinners (i.e. breakfast plus one additional full meal each day). Price does not include airfare, other meals, alcohol, or optional trip insurance.
Chumley’s take: “Southern Spain is fascinating. Christian churches (even cathedrals) are built right on top of ancient mosques, from the Moorish period. Talk about layers of stories.”
