Cuba: Then and Now, By Small Group

December 11 – 18, 2019

Welcome to one of the world’s great places for discovery – La Cuba – a place that will inspire reflection on every level.  Join Chumley and a native Cuban guide to explore parts of this Vast Unknown by small group (on what will officially be known as a “people-to-people educational visit” – which is sanctioned by the US government).  We’ll stay in lovely and comfortable casas particulares and hotels, enjoy local foods, drink, and music, and delve into a fascinating world of history, architecture, and a search for identity.  All in a tropical setting of guavas, simple pleasures, and uncommon safety.  We’ll spend our time in three distinct areas of Cuba:  Santa Clara; colonial Trinidad and Cienfuegos; and La Habana (Havana).

Santa Clara features a lovely colonial square, and tributes to Che Guevara and the Cuban Revolution.  In Cienfuegos and Trinidad we’ll explore the unique and beautiful colonial architecture and city lay-outs that span the early Spanish period to the sugar boom of the mid-19th century.  Havana will feature the city museum, housed in the original colonial government palacio, the national museum of Cuban art, Ernest Hemingway’s life and legacy (and estate home), and the delightful architectural progression of neighborhoods – from the early Spanish core, to the early- and mid-20th century enclaves of Centro Habana and Vedado.

Trip highlights:

  • Cuba’s agricultural heritage
  • Music and art
  • The legacy of Cuban-American connectedness.

Trip price:  $3750 / person (double occupancy; single supplement, $500); price includes travel visa, comfortable ground transportation in Cuba, 7 nights accommodation with breakfast in Cuba, guided touring throughout the trip, 7 lunches and 7 dinners, (i.e. breakfast plus one additional full meal each day).  Price does not include airfare (which will be arranged by Explore Up Close), alcohol, discretionary tipping, or optional trip insurance.

Chumley’s take:  “Cuba is one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been.  Not sure how many Lost Worlds are just a 40-minute flight from the U.S.”
