Ticket to Ride: The Clinchfield Railroad!
Monday, November 30th | 2:00 - 3:00 PM
Carrying coals to Newcastle? No, but carrying coal to South Carolina!
Join Chumley Cope, historian and founder of Explore Up Close, via Zoom for a video presentation about Appalachian railroad history, as we chase an iron horse through the mountains!
By 1924, just as America's transportation was on the cusp of radical change, the Clinchfield Railroad became the last "Class 1" railroad chartered in the United States of America. It was created to carry coal from eastern Kentucky on an impressive journey up and over the High Appalachian mountains, ending in "Hub City" - Spartanburg, South Carolina. Folks didn't know it then, but this would be the last chapter of railroads as the dominant means of transportation in the United States: a year later, the very first federal highway act would be passed.
This fun video presentation will follow the tracks of the Clinchfield to uncover nearby scenic sites and colorful stories along its route. All aboard!
This presentation will last about 45 minutes, and will be followed by time for questions & discussion. And for folks dreaming of travel in 2021, we'll also preview two spectacular Western rail journeys that cut through the Colorado and Canadian Rockies!
This event is FREE for Corps of Discovery members, and $15 / ticket for non-members. To learn more about our Corps of Discovery membership (a great value!), please click here.
Event Price: $15
